Discovering the Hidden Gem of Lake Kivu
As I journeyed back to South Africa, I took a creative detour – a nine-hour bus ride from Uganda’s vibrant capital, Kampala, to Rwanda’s breathtaking landscapes. After a rigorous check-in process, I arrived at Lake Kivu, situated on the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The lake’s tranquil waters and lush green mountains brought me an inexplicable sense of peace.
I was lucky to get an early check-in, which allowed me to seize the day. After a catnap, I enjoyed a cuppa and some reading on my hotel’s balcony while chatting with the waiter about local activities.
Rejuvenated, I hired a motorcycle driver to explore the peninsula, soaking in the local culture and Lake Kivu’s tranquility. This flexible ride allowed me to stop spontaneously and capture photos, observing boats and birdlife along the way.
As an avid solo traveler, I ended the day by catching the golden hour from my balcony, a perfect introduction to a restful night.
Exploring Kigali
After a restful night, I took a scenic three-hour drive to Kigali using public transportation. I was struck by the country’s cleanliness and orderliness, and the breathtaking views of the thousand hills. Kigali city offers great views, and a drive or motorcycle ride allows you to take in the different ways people live.
A highlight of my trip was visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant tribute to the victims of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide. The emotional experience left me appreciative of peace and freedom.
The Kigali Convention Centre is also worth a visit. Even small moments like taking a walk at night and having a solo dinner with views of the city lit up like diamonds are memories ingrained in me.
Takeaway
Take that detour, explore, and make your own memories. Rwanda is a hidden gem that will leave an indelible mark on your heart. You don’t have to tick all the top attractions to make memorable moments.
